ISO 20653 IPX9K Test Chamber Description
Designed for Road Vehicle Electrical Components
The ISO 20653 IPX9K Test Chamber is used to evaluate whether vehicle electrical components and enclosures can withstand high-pressure and high-temperature water spray conditions. It is especially relevant for automotive parts that may be exposed to car washing, high-pressure cleaning, road spray, outdoor service environments or harsh wash-down conditions.
Typical test samples include automotive lights, sensors, cameras, connectors, ECUs, control modules, battery enclosures, charging ports, inverters, high-voltage components and other vehicle-related electrical assemblies.
Simulating High-Pressure and High-Temperature Cleaning Conditions
IPX9K testing is more severe than ordinary rain spray or water jet testing. The chamber sprays hot water at high pressure from defined angles while the specimen is positioned on a rotating turntable. This helps simulate demanding cleaning and wash-down conditions that may challenge seals, housings, cable entries, connectors and enclosure joints.
The test result depends on the stability of pressure, flow rate, water temperature, nozzle distance, spray angle, turntable rotation and sample mounting. For this reason, the chamber is designed with a controlled water supply system, precision nozzle arrangement, stainless steel chamber structure and PLC-based monitoring interface.
Applicable Standards and Test Scope
ISO 20653 IPX9K Test Requirements
ISO 20653 is mainly used for degrees of protection provided by enclosures of electrical equipment used in road vehicles. IPX9K is commonly applied to automotive components that require resistance to high-pressure and high-temperature water spray.
The KINGPO ISO 20653 IPX9K Test Chamber is designed to support IPX9K related test conditions, including high-pressure water output, elevated water temperature, controlled flow rate, defined spray distance and multi-angle spraying.
IEC 60529 IPX9 and ISO 20653 IPX9K Boundary
IEC 60529 is a general ingress protection standard for enclosures of electrical and electronic equipment. ISO 20653 is more specifically related to road vehicle electrical equipment. In practice, customers may mention IPX9, IPX9K or IP69K depending on the product field, market requirement and referenced standard.
Before quotation or testing, the target standard should be confirmed. Automotive parts normally refer to ISO 20653 IPX9K or DIN 40050-9 related requirements, while general enclosure testing may refer to IEC 60529 IPX9. The chamber configuration, documentation and test procedure should be selected according to the applicable standard.
DIN 40050-9 Application Background
DIN 40050-9 is historically associated with IP69K / IPX9K high-pressure and high-temperature water spray testing, especially in vehicle and wash-down applications. If your project specifies DIN 40050-9, ISO 20653, IEC 60529 or customer-specific IPX9K conditions, KINGPO can review the requirement and recommend the suitable chamber configuration.

Testing Principle
How the IPX9K High-Pressure Hot Water Spray Test Works
During IPX9K testing, the specimen is mounted on the turntable inside the chamber. High-temperature water is sprayed toward the specimen at high pressure from defined angles. The typical spray angles are 0°, 30°, 60° and 90°, with the sample exposed at each angle according to the applicable test method.
The turntable rotates during the test so that the specimen is exposed to the water spray in a controlled and repeatable manner. After the test, the specimen is inspected for water ingress, sealing failure, functional degradation or other acceptance criteria defined by the product standard or customer test plan.

Why Pressure, Flow, Temperature and Distance Must Be Controlled Together
IPX9K testing is sensitive to several parameters at the same time. Water pressure affects impact intensity, water temperature affects thermal stress and sealing behavior, flow rate affects water delivery, and nozzle distance affects spray impact distribution.
If any one of these conditions is unstable, the test result may not represent the intended IPX9K condition. A reliable test chamber should therefore control and monitor pressure, flow rate, water temperature, nozzle distance, spray angle, test duration and turntable operation together.
Typical Test Samples
Automotive Lighting, Sensors and Cameras
Automotive lights, sensors and cameras are frequently exposed to water spray, high-pressure washing and outdoor road conditions. IPX9K testing helps evaluate whether lens seals, housings, cable entries and connector interfaces remain protected after severe water spray exposure.
Connectors, ECUs and Control Modules
Vehicle connectors, ECUs and control modules often need to maintain sealing integrity while operating in wet or contaminated environments. The IPX9K test chamber helps manufacturers verify enclosure protection and identify design weaknesses before mass production.
Battery Enclosures, Charging Ports and High-Voltage Components
New energy vehicle components, including battery enclosures, charging ports, inverters and high-voltage electrical assemblies, may require strict waterproof validation. IPX9K testing can support R&D validation, production quality control and supplier qualification.
Industrial and Wash-Down Resistant Products
Although ISO 20653 is primarily related to road vehicle electrical equipment, high-pressure hot water spray testing may also be requested for industrial enclosures, outdoor electronics, heavy machinery components and products exposed to wash-down cleaning conditions. The applicable standard and test method should be confirmed before testing.

Common Testing Errors and How to Avoid Them
Unstable Water Pressure or Flow Rate
Pressure and flow rate should be stabilized before starting the formal test. If the pump output, flow control or nozzle condition is unstable, the water impact condition may vary and affect test repeatability.
Incorrect Water Temperature
IPX9K testing requires high-temperature water. If the water temperature is too low or fluctuates during the test, the result may not represent the intended test severity. Operators should verify temperature before and during the test cycle.
Nozzle Distance or Angle Deviation
The nozzle-to-sample distance and spray angle should follow the selected standard or test plan. Incorrect distance or misaligned spray angle may lead to uneven exposure and unreliable test conclusions.
Poor Sample Mounting
The specimen should be securely mounted on the turntable without blocking critical test surfaces. Loose mounting, improper fixture design or incorrect orientation may cause unstable test exposure.
Missing Test Records
For laboratory traceability, operators should record pressure, flow rate, water temperature, spray distance, spray angle, test duration, sample orientation and post-test inspection observations. These records are important for audits, customer reports and repeat testing.
