Electrical Safety Test Equipment FAQs
Primarily IEC 60335 series, IEC 60601-1, IEC 60990, ISO 28927-1, EN 60745, etc.
IEC 60335-1:2020 (Edition 6.0) remains the current base standard. Between 2024 and 2026, most Part 2 standards have been aligned to Edition 6, with important updates including:
โข Mandatory use of Test Probe 18 and Probe 19 for accessibility
โข Stricter external surface temperature limits
โข Enhanced requirements for remote operation and cybersecurity (Annex U, Clauses 22.40, 22.51)
โข Strengthened battery-operated appliance rules (Annex B, Clause 12)
โข Updated rules for appliances using flammable refrigerants (IEC 60335-2-24, -2-89, -2-40:2024)
KingPo test equipment has been updated to support all 2020 Edition 6 clauses and the latest Part 2 alignments (e.g. IEC 60335-2-9:2023/A11:2023 enforcement Jan 2026). Contact us for a free gap analysis.
Leakage current is measured according to Clauses 13 and 16 using the measuring network of IEC 60990 Figure 4. Typical limits (at operating temperature):
- Portable/hand-held appliances: โค 0.75 mA (normal condition), โค 1.5 mA (single fault)
- Stationary/fixed appliances: โค 3.5 mA (normal), โค 5 mA (single fault) KingPo leakage current testers provide high-precision RMS measurement (resolution ยฑ5 ยตA, bandwidth up to 1 kHz) and are fully compatible with IEC 60990. Most common failure: insulation contamination or insufficient creepage/clearance leading to re-test or recall.
Clause 16 requires a withstand voltage test immediately after the temperature-rise test:
- Basic insulation (Class I): 1 250 V
- Supplementary insulation (Class II): 2 750 V Test duration: 1 minute, short-circuit current > 5 mA (IEC 61180-1). For routine production-line testing (Annex A): 1 000โ2 500 V, 1โ60 seconds. KingPo hipot testers support 0โ5 kV AC/DC with automatic current limiting (5โ30 mA range) and meet CBTL calibration requirements.
Edition 6 significantly strengthened Annex B (battery-operated appliances) and Clause 12:
- Charging, over-charge, short-circuit, and abnormal operation tests
- Metal-ion battery specific requirements (UN 38.3 T.3/T.4 vibration & shock referenced)
- Leakage current limit often tightened to โค 0.5 mA in many cordless products KingPo battery endurance testers, force applicators, and charging simulation fixtures help verify compliance for cordless vacuum cleaners, power tools, and IoT devices. Brazil INMETRO enforcement for many battery products is scheduled for 2026.
According to data from TรV, Intertek, Eurofins, and CB scheme reports, the top failure modes are:
- Leakage current exceeding limits (most frequent โ ~50% of failures)
- Excessive touchable surface temperature (Clause 11)
- Insufficient creepage/clearance distances (Clause 29)
- Abnormal operation leading to fire/electric shock hazard (Clause 19 โ PEC + EMI double fault)
- Mechanical strength / accessibility failures (Clause 21 โ Probes 11, 13, 18, 19) KingPo full suite of IEC 60335 testers (leakage, hipot, temperature rise, flexing, vibration, abnormal operation) + pre-compliance checklist helps catch issues early in R&D and avoid expensive re-testing.
Edition 6 introduced Annex U (software evaluation) and new clauses (22.40, 22.51) requiring:
- Validation of remote control safety
- Simulation of software faults and network attacks
- Abnormal operation under PEC + EMI double fault conditions KingPo abnormal operation and endurance testers can simulate fault scenarios, followed by leakage current re-check after EMC exposure. This is a growing hotspot due to the rapid increase in IoT household appliances.
Probe 18 (small unjointed test finger) and Probe 19 (very fine probe) were introduced/strengthened in Edition 6 alignments for better simulation of child / small-object access:
- Probe 18: used to check accessibility to live parts or hot surfaces
- Probe 19: finer probe for gaps in grilles, vents, etc. KingPo supplies complete IEC 61032 / IEC 60335 test probe kits (Probes 11, 13, 18, 19, etc.) with calibrated force applicators (10 N, 20 N, 30 N) to meet the latest 2025โ2026 requirements.
IEC 60335-2-24, -2-89, -2-40:2024 editions allow higher charge limits in some cases but demand:
- Refrigerant detection systems
- Ignition risk assessment (spark ignition test)
- Leakage simulation under Clause 19
- Double-wall heat exchangers resistant to freezing KingPo spark ignition testers, endurance machines, and leakage simulation apparatus are fully compliant with these updated safety clauses.
Annex A routine tests typically include:
- Protective earthing continuity (โค 0.1 ฮฉ at 10 A)
- Dielectric strength (1 000โ2 500 V, 1โ60 s)
- Functional / leakage current check KingPo integrated production-line testers combine hipot, ground bond, and leakage current in one station with barcode traceability and ISO 17025 calibration.
Yes โ KingPo equipment supports IEC 60335-1:2020 Edition 6 + over 100 Part 2 standards (including -2-7 washing machines, -2-24 refrigerators, -2-40 heat pumps, -2-89 commercial appliances, etc.).
