After the initial test in clause Y.4.4 b), specimens are cooled for 24 hours at the manufacturer-specified minimum temperature or -33°C (if unspecified), then subjected to repeated impacts from a 1.35 kg hammer dropped from 150 mm height.
The hammer head is made of stainless steel, with a diameter of 28.6 mm and a flat striking surface of 25.4 mm diameter featuring slightly rounded edges. Specimens are placed on short lengths of 50×100 mm minimum clear spruce wood during impact. The test is repeated every 24 hours for two additional days, followed by 24 hours rest at 25°C ± 3°C before final compliance check. The apparatus is used to examine specimens for cracking, deformation, or other adverse effects after cold exposure and mechanical stress.
