NEMA 4/4X Nozzle Description

NEMA 4/4X nozzle with 25mm Inner diameter and Water Flow 240L (65 gal) / min

Inner diameter:1 in

Material: stainless steel

length :200mm

5.7.1 Test Method

The enclosure and its external mechanisms shall be subjected to a stream of water from a hose that has a 25mm(1 in) inside diameter nozzle that delivers at least 240L(65 gal) per minute.

The nozzle shall be held from 3.0 to 3.5m(10 to 12 feet)from the enclosure, and the spray of water shall be directed at all points of potential water entry such as seams, joints, external operating mechanisms, and such.A seam is the junction of,or the joint between, two pieces. When two covers or doors are adjacent, their common edges shall be considered a single seam. The nozzle shall be moved along each test point one time at a uniform nominal rate of 6mm/sec.

A conduit shall be permitted to be installed to equalize internal and external pressures but shall not serve as a drain.

5.7.2 Evaluation

The enclosure shall be considered to have met the requirements if at the conclusion of the test no water has entered the enclosure.

Professional Construction & Technical Precision

The NEMA 4/4X Nozzle is precision-machined from high-grade SUS304 stainless steel, ensuring excellent corrosion resistance and dimensional stability even after repeated high-pressure water exposure. The 25mm inner diameter bore is manufactured to tight tolerances to produce a consistent, powerful water jet that accurately replicates real-world hose-down conditions. The 200mm overall length provides comfortable handling while maintaining structural rigidity during prolonged testing sessions.

Every nozzle is individually inspected for flow rate, jet pattern, and dimensional accuracy before shipment, guaranteeing repeatable test results that meet the strict requirements of NEMA 250 Section 5.7 for Type 4 and 4X enclosures.

Common Error Mitigation

To achieve accurate and standards-compliant NEMA 4/4X hosedown test results, operators should follow these best practices:

  • Verify the nozzle flow rate reaches at least 240 L/min before each test series using a calibrated flow meter.
  • Maintain the exact 3.0–3.5 m distance from the enclosure surface throughout the test.
  • Move the nozzle at a consistent 6 mm/sec along every seam and potential entry point—avoid speeding up or pausing.
  • Ensure the enclosure is properly oriented and all external mechanisms (doors, covers, operators) are in their normal operating position.
  • Record test duration, flow rate, distance, movement speed, and pass/fail observations for full traceability and audit compliance.

NEMA 4/4X Nozzle FAQs

What is the NEMA 4/4X Nozzle used for?
The NEMA 4/4X Nozzle is a precision water jet nozzle designed for the hosedown test required by NEMA 250 Section 5.7 for Type 4 and Type 4X enclosures. It verifies that electrical enclosures can withstand powerful hose-directed water without allowing ingress, ensuring reliable protection in wet or outdoor environments. (See Testing Principle section for full test method.)
What are the exact specifications of the NEMA 4/4X Nozzle?
The nozzle has a 25 mm (1 inch) inner diameter, is made of SUS304 stainless steel, measures 200 mm in overall length, and delivers a minimum flow rate of 240 L/min (65 gal/min). It is used at a distance of 3.0–3.5 m (10–12 ft) from the enclosure and moved at a uniform speed of 6 mm/sec. (See Technical Parameters table for complete specifications.)
How do you perform the NEMA 4/4X hosedown test?
The enclosure is exposed to a continuous stream of water from the 25 mm nozzle delivering at least 240 L/min. The nozzle is held 3.0–3.5 m away and directed at all potential points of water entry (seams, joints, external mechanisms, conduit entries). The nozzle is moved along each test point at a uniform rate of 6 mm/sec. After the test, the enclosure passes if no water has entered. (Refer to carousel image #5 for the complete test setup.)
What is the difference between NEMA Type 4 and Type 4X enclosures?
Both Type 4 and Type 4X enclosures provide protection against hose-directed water, windblown dust, and ice formation. Type 4X offers additional corrosion protection, making it suitable for harsher outdoor or chemical environments. The same NEMA 4/4X Nozzle and test method (NEMA 250 Section 5.7) are used for both ratings.
Is the NEMA 4/4X Nozzle suitable for IPX5 or IPX6 testing?
Yes. The 25 mm nozzle delivering 240 L/min closely aligns with the high-pressure water jet requirements of IEC 60529 IPX5 (6.3 mm nozzle, 12.5 L/min) and IPX6 (12.5 mm nozzle, 100 L/min). Many laboratories use this NEMA nozzle as a practical equivalent for IPX5/IPX6-equivalent hose-down testing on larger enclosures. (See Compliance & Regulatory Assurance section.)
What materials is the NEMA 4/4X Nozzle made from and how durable is it?
The nozzle is precision-machined from high-grade SUS304 stainless steel, providing excellent corrosion resistance and structural integrity even after repeated exposure to high-pressure water. With proper care, it maintains dimensional accuracy and flow performance for thousands of test cycles.
How often should the NEMA 4/4X Nozzle flow rate be verified?
Verify the minimum flow rate of 240 L/min before each test series using a calibrated flow meter. Full dimensional and flow-rate verification is recommended every 6–12 months or after 5,000 test cycles. A factory flow verification certificate is included with every nozzle.
Why is the 6 mm/sec movement speed important in the hosedown test?
The uniform movement speed of 6 mm/sec ensures consistent water exposure along every seam and joint. Moving too quickly may miss potential entry points, while pausing can create unrealistic localized pressure. This speed is explicitly required by NEMA 250 Section 5.7 for repeatable and reproducible test results.
Can the NEMA 4/4X Nozzle be used for automated or robotic test systems?
Yes. The compact 200 mm design and standard 1-inch hose connection make it easy to integrate into automated or semi-automated test rigs. Many laboratories mount the nozzle on linear actuators or robotic arms to maintain the exact 6 mm/sec movement speed and 3.0–3.5 m distance. (See carousel image #7 for laboratory automation example.)
What happens if water enters the enclosure during the NEMA 4/4X test?
If any water enters the enclosure during or after the hosedown test, the enclosure fails the NEMA Type 4 or 4X rating. The test is designed to simulate real-world hose-down cleaning or severe weather exposure, ensuring internal equipment remains protected. (See Common Error Mitigation for tips to achieve consistent pass results.)
