High Frequency Spark Generator
Product Overview
Pyrolytic self-cleaning ovens operate at elevated temperatures to thermally decompose food residues and other deposits inside the oven cavity. Because combustible gases or vapours may be generated during this process, IEC 60335-2-6 includes tests intended to evaluate whether the cleaning cycle can result in sustained ignition or the emission of flames.
The KP-HF3506 High Frequency Spark Generator provides the spark source used during this type of assessment. Rather than functioning as a general-purpose electrical arc generator, it is intended to reproduce the spark conditions associated with the IEC 60335-2-6 pyrolytic oven test procedure.
Its specified 3 mm spark length and minimum 0.5 J energy per spark correspond to the ignition characteristics referenced in the relevant pyrolytic oven tests. The compact bench-top design also allows the generator to be positioned outside the test appliance while the electrodes are arranged at the required test location.

IEC 60335-2-6 Test Context
IEC 60335-2-6 covers the safety of stationary electric cooking appliances including ovens and specifically includes pyrolytic self-cleaning ovens within its scope. The current IEC edition is IEC 60335-2-6:2024.
For pyrolytic self-cleaning ovens, the standard includes specific construction and test requirements related to gases and flames produced during the cleaning process.
Clause 22.111 – Flame Emission During Pyrolytic Cleaning
Clause 22.111 evaluates whether flames can be emitted from areas such as the oven door seals, vents or other openings during the cleaning cycle.
In the test procedure, a defined test load is placed inside the oven and the spark-generator electrodes are positioned above it. Spark bursts are applied at specified oven-temperature stages during the pyrolytic cleaning process.
The required ignition source uses sparks approximately 3 mm long, with an energy of at least 0.5 J per spark. The KP-HF3506 product specification directly identifies this clause as its intended application.
Related Spark Requirement in Clause 22.110
Clause 22.110 addresses a related but different hazard: whether ignitable gases can be discharged through the oven vents during pyrolytic cleaning.
In that procedure, spark bursts are applied in and around the relevant vents. The spark requirement is likewise approximately 3 mm in length with at least 0.5 J per spark.
Because the supplied KP-HF3506 documentation specifically declares Clause 22.111, customers requiring the generator for Clause 22.110 should identify this requirement before quotation so that the intended test arrangement and accessories can be confirmed.
How the High Frequency Spark Generator Is Used
The generator provides an external high-voltage ignition source while the oven is operated under the test conditions required by the applicable IEC 60335-2-6 procedure.
Prepare and operate the pyrolytic self-cleaning oven according to the applicable standard procedure.
Position the spark electrodes at the location specified for the test.
Connect the electrodes to the High Frequency Spark Generator.
Apply spark bursts at the required stages of the cleaning cycle.
Observe the oven for the ignition or flame behaviour specified by the relevant clause.
Why Spark Energy and Gap Matter
For this application, the important test condition is not simply whether the generator can produce a visible high-voltage arc.
The IEC test procedure defines the ignition source in terms of the physical spark length and energy delivered by each spark. This is important because output voltage alone does not fully define the ignition capability of a spark.
| Spark Length | 3 mm |
| Energy per Spark | ≥ 0.5 J |
| Output Mode | Bipolar |
| Output Voltage | >20 kV |
This makes it important to evaluate a spark generator according to the required spark condition rather than comparing products only by their maximum voltage rating.
Laboratory Use and Typical Applications
The KP-HF3506 is primarily intended for organizations performing safety evaluation of pyrolytic self-cleaning ovens, including:
- Household cooking appliance manufacturers
- Oven R&D and product validation laboratories
- Electrical appliance safety laboratories
- Third-party testing laboratories
- Certification and conformity-assessment organizations
- Quality-control departments evaluating products against IEC 60335-2-6 requirements
For appliance manufacturers, the generator can be incorporated into development and pre-compliance testing before a product is submitted for external certification testing.
For independent laboratories, the equipment provides a dedicated ignition source for reproducing the spark conditions required by the relevant pyrolytic oven test procedure.
Compliance & Regulatory Assurance
The KP-HF3506 High Frequency Spark Generator is designed for the spark ignition application specified in IEC 60335-2-6 Clause 22.111 for pyrolytic self-cleaning ovens. It provides a 3 mm spark length with ≥0.5 J energy per spark. Spark Generator
The generator serves as the ignition source within the complete IEC test setup. The applicable standard edition, test clause and electrode arrangement should be confirmed according to the laboratory’s test requirements.
