Product Overview

The IEC 60335-2-6 Figure 101 Test Vessels are laboratory test accessories used to provide a repeatable thermal load when applicable electric hob elements are evaluated under the normal operating conditions defined in IEC 60335-2-6.

Unlike ordinary household cookware, the vessels use defined material, bottom geometry and dimensions to reduce test variation. The complete set covers the principal cooking-zone diameter ranges specified by Figure 101, helping laboratories select the appropriate vessel for the hob element under test.

What These Test Vessels Are Used For

IEC 60335-2-6 defines normal operating conditions for stationary cooking ranges, hobs, ovens and similar appliances. For hob elements other than induction hob elements and induction wok elements, the test load consists of a vessel containing water.

The purpose of the Figure 101 vessel is to create a controlled and reproducible cooking load rather than to measure a parameter by itself. It forms part of the overall test setup used when appliance temperature and operating behavior are evaluated under the normal-operation condition specified in Clause 3.1.9.101.

IEC 60335-2-6 Figure 101 Test Method

For applicable non-induction hob elements, the selected vessel is filled with cold water and positioned centrally on the cooking zone.

1. Select a vessel with a bottom diameter appropriate to the cooking zone.
2. Place the vessel centrally on the hob element.
3. Fill the vessel with the specified quantity of cold water.
4. Position the lid so that steam does not interfere with the test.
5. Set the thermal control to its highest setting until the water boils.
6. Reduce the control so that the water boils gently.
7. Add water when required to maintain the level during prolonged operation.

Why Vessel Geometry Matters

Hob safety testing can be influenced by the thermal characteristics and contact condition of the cookware placed on the cooking zone. Vessel diameter, material, bottom flatness and liquid quantity can all affect heat transfer from the hob.

Figure 101 therefore defines reference vessel dimensions and controls the bottom geometry. Using the specified vessel helps laboratories improve repeatability between tests and reduces variation associated with ordinary cookware of unknown construction.

Selecting the Correct Vessel

For circular hob elements, select the vessel according to the diameter of the cooking zone:

Cooking-Zone Diameter Recommended Figure 101 Vessel
≤ 110 mm Ø110 mm
> 110 to ≤ 145 mm Ø145 mm
> 145 to ≤ 180 mm Ø180 mm
> 180 to ≤ 220 mm Ø220 mm
> 220 to ≤ 300 mm Ø300 mm

For non-circular cooking zones, the applicable standard instructions and the actual hob geometry should be confirmed before the test configuration is selected.

FAQ

What are IEC 60335-2-6 Figure 101 Test Vessels used for?
The vessels are used to establish the normal operating load for hob elements other than induction hob elements and induction wok elements. During the relevant test, a suitable aluminium vessel is filled with water and placed centrally on the cooking zone while the hob operates under the conditions specified in IEC 60335-2-6 Clause 3.1.9.101
Are Figure 101 test vessels suitable for induction hobs?
No. IEC 60335-2-6 distinguishes Figure 101 and Figure 102 vessels. Figure 101 applies to non-induction hob elements and uses aluminium vessels with water. Induction hob elements use the Figure 102 vessel configuration, which is made from low-carbon steel and is operated with cooking oil under the specified test conditions.
What sizes are included in the standard vessel set?
The standard set contains five vessel diameters: approximately Ø110 mm, Ø145 mm, Ø180 mm, Ø220 mm and Ø300 mm. These sizes correspond to the cooking-zone ranges specified in IEC 60335-2-6 Figure 101 and allow laboratories to select a vessel appropriate to the diameter of the hob element being tested.
What material are the Figure 101 test vessels made from?
IEC 60335-2-6 specifies an unpolished commercial-quality aluminium vessel for the relevant normal-operation test. The vessel has a flat bottom and is used with a lid. The aluminium Figure 101 construction should not be confused with the low-carbon-steel construction specified for Figure 102 induction hob test vessels.
Why is a lid required during the test?
The vessel is covered during normal-operation testing, and IEC 60335-2-6 specifies that the lid is positioned so that steam does not affect the test. This helps establish a controlled operating condition while water is heated to boiling and subsequently maintained at a gentle boil during the required test period.
How is the correct vessel selected for a cooking zone?
For circular cooking zones, the vessel bottom diameter is selected to be approximately equal to the diameter of the cooking zone. Figure 101 provides five defined diameter ranges covering zones up to 300 mm. The selected vessel is normally positioned centrally on the cooking zone during the test.
How much water is placed in each vessel?
IEC 60335-2-6 Table 101 specifies quantities according to cooking-zone diameter: 0.6 L, 1.0 L, 1.5 L, 2.0 L and 3.0 L for the five successive diameter ranges up to 300 mm. During boiling, additional water is added as necessary to maintain the required level
Why is the flatness of the vessel bottom important?
The vessel bottom forms the thermal interface between the test load and the hob surface. Figure 101 therefore controls the bottom geometry: the base must not be convex, and its maximum concavity is limited to 0.05 mm. This helps avoid uncontrolled differences in contact condition during standardized appliance testing
Can laboratories purchase individual vessel sizes instead of a complete set?
The standard defines the required vessel geometry rather than a commercial packaging quantity. If only particular cooking-zone diameters are tested, individual sizes may be considered depending on the selected KINGPO supply configuration. Please specify the required cooking-zone diameter and applicable standard edition when requesting a quotation.
What information should be provided when requesting a quotation?
Please provide the applicable IEC 60335-2-6 edition, the type of hob being tested, cooking-zone diameter or dimensions, required vessel sizes and any documentation requirements. Clearly identifying whether the sample is a conventional electric hob or an induction hob is especially important because Figure 101 and Figure 102 require different vessel constructions.
