IEC 60335-2-23 Wooden Sphere Product Overview
The IEC 60335-2-23 Wooden Sphere provides a consistent physical reference inside a hairdryer hood. The position of the simulated head in relation to the hood and air outlet can affect airflow, temperature distribution and the operating condition of the appliance.
Using a standardized 200 mm wooden sphere for hairdryer testing helps reduce variations caused by different head sizes, positions and distances from the air-outlet grille. It also improves repeatability across different samples and laboratories.
This passive test accessory does not measure temperature, power input or electrical safety parameters. It establishes the required physical test condition while separate laboratory instruments perform the applicable measurements.

Standard Editions and Clause References
The IEC 60335-2-23 Wooden Sphere supports the normal-operation arrangements specified in both the 2016+A1:2019 and 2026 editions of the standard.
| Standard Edition | Clause | Application |
|---|---|---|
| IEC 60335-2-23:2016+A1:2019 | 3.1.9 | Normal operation of helmet-type and flexible-hood hairdryers |
| IEC 60335-2-23:2026 | 3.1.9.101 | Normal operation of helmet-type and flexible-hood hairdryers |
The clause numbering was reorganized in the 2026 edition, while the specified simulated head and its role in the normal-operation arrangement remain applicable.
This accessory addresses the physical setup only. Complete evaluation requires all applicable tests under Part 2-23 together with the relevant requirements of IEC 60335-1.
Standardized Head Simulation
The test sphere represents the position of a user’s head inside the hairdryer hood. This creates a consistent relationship between the simulated head, the hood and the air-outlet grille.
The 200 mm simulated head sphere allows the laboratory to establish the specified operating condition without using a human subject. A standardized helmet-type hairdryer test fixture also improves consistency when comparing samples or repeating tests after a design change.
Its wooden construction, defined diameter and dull black-painted surface provide a stable physical reference throughout the test.

Hairdryer Test Arrangements
Helmet-Type Hairdryer
The hood axis is inclined at 60° to the horizontal, or at the maximum angle allowed by the construction when this is less.
The sphere is positioned so that:
- Its centre coincides with the hood axis.
- The shortest distance to the air-outlet grille is 50 mm.
- The sphere remains stable during operation.
- The hood remains at the specified angle.
This arrangement reproduces the position of the user’s head while the appliance operates.
Flexible Hood Hairdryer
The flexible hood is placed over the wire frame specified in Figure 101. The frame is then positioned over the simulated head sphere.
The wooden head form reproduces the normal relationship between the flexible hood and the user’s head.
This test arrangement supports flexible hood designs without using a human subject.
Typical Laboratory Applications
This standardized hairdryer test accessory supports development, compliance evaluation and repeatable laboratory testing.
| Type testing of helmet-type hairdryers | Normal-operation setup before temperature-rise evaluations | Product development and pre-compliance testing | Manufacturer quality control |
| Third-party and certification laboratory testing | Comparison of different hood designs | Evaluation of airflow and heating structure changes | Maintenance of hairdryer safety test stations |
Professional Testing Applications
Hairdryer Manufacturers
Manufacturers can use the simulated head sphere during product development and internal compliance testing to evaluate changes to hood geometry, air outlets, airflow, heating elements and temperature-control systems.
Third-Party Laboratories
Laboratories can integrate the passive fixture into an existing hairdryer safety test station and use it with current temperature, power and electrical safety measurement systems.
Certification Laboratories
Certification laboratories can establish the specified operating position before performing the relevant measurements and safety assessments.
Quality Control Departments
Quality teams can use the same physical reference for production comparison, internal verification and investigation of changes in operating temperature or airflow.
Laboratory and Procurement Value
The IEC 60335-2-23 Wooden Sphere provides a defined and repeatable alternative to testing with a human subject.
The standard head form supports consistent sample positioning, clearer test documentation and repeatable comparison of different product designs.
It can be incorporated into an existing laboratory system without replacing current temperature, power or electrical safety instruments.
Compliance & Regulatory Assurance
The IEC 60335-2-23 Wooden Sphere is designed to support the normal-operation testing of helmet-type and flexible-hood hairdryers under the 2016+A1:2019 and 2026 editions of the standard.
Final product compliance depends on the complete laboratory setup, including hood angle, sphere alignment, the specified 50 mm distance, applicable Figure 101 wire frame, measuring instruments, test procedure and adopted standard edition.
Technical Inquiry & Expert Support
For technical evaluation, provide the applicable standard edition, hairdryer type, existing laboratory arrangement and required project documentation.

Quality and Documentation
KINGPO applies ISO 9001 quality management procedures to the production and inspection of the IEC 60335-2-23 Wooden Sphere and other laboratory test accessories. ISO 9001 and CE-related documentation are available.
IEC publishes the applicable testing standard but does not certify or approve individual test fixtures. The product is designed for the relevant test arrangement and should not be described as an “IEC-certified” product.
Compliance & Regulatory Assurance
The IEC 60335-2-23 Wooden Sphere is designed to support the normal-operation testing of helmet-type hairdryers and hairdryers with flexible hood attachments according to IEC 60335-2-23:2016+A1:2019 Clause 3.1.9 and IEC 60335-2-23:2026 Clause 3.1.9.101. Its 200 mm wooden construction and dull black-painted surface provide the standardized simulated head geometry required for the relevant hairdryer test arrangement.
As with any standard-related test accessory, final product compliance depends on the complete laboratory setup, including the hood angle, sphere alignment, specified 50 mm distance, applicable Figure 101 wire frame, measuring instruments, test procedure and adopted standard edition. The IEC 60335-2-23 Wooden Sphere establishes the required physical test condition but does not independently demonstrate full compliance of the hairdryer. ISO 9001 and CE-related documentation are available.
