ISO 10651-4 32 mm Plug and Ring Gauges

Product Overview

User-powered resuscitators rely on properly designed connectors to ensure compatibility between the resuscitator body, valves and associated breathing accessories. Where a conical connection is provided for a bag refill valve, the connector geometry must meet the dimensional requirements specified in ISO 10651-4.

The 32 mm Plug and Ring Gauges provide defined reference geometry for inspecting these mating connectors. Instead of measuring airflow or ventilation performance, the gauges are used to assess whether the conical connection has the required dimensions and engagement position.

The KP-10651P is designed for inspection of the 32 mm socket connector. The KP-10651R is used for checking the corresponding cone connector associated with the bag refill valve.

Together, they provide complementary inspection tools for manufacturers and laboratories evaluating both sides of the 32 mm conical connection.

Both gauges are manufactured from 440C stainless steel, with specified HRC 58–60 hardness and critical surface roughness not exceeding Ra 0.8 μm.

ISO 10651-4 Clause 6.6 – Bag Refill Valve Connector Inspection

ISO 10651-4 specifies particular requirements for user-powered resuscitators, including connector requirements relevant to the safe assembly and use of resuscitator components.

Clause 6.6 addresses the conical connector provided for attachment of a bag refill valve.

Where this connection is provided, the applicable standard specifies a 32 mm socket connector with a 1:28 taper.

Plug Gauge Inspection

For the socket connector, the ISO 10651-4:2023 inspection procedure uses the Figure 1 plug gauge under defined engagement conditions.

Axial Engagement Force 50 ± 5 N
Simultaneous Rotation 20 ± 5°
Acceptance Assessment Position of the connector’s leading edge relative to the minimum and maximum diameter steps of the plug gauge.

These values describe the required inspection conditions. The plug gauge itself is a mechanical reference component, not a force or torque measuring instrument.

Ring Gauge Inspection

The Figure 1 ring gauge may also be used to check the corresponding cone connector of a bag refill valve.

Its internal reference geometry is used to assess the cone’s dimensional engagement under the applicable inspection procedure.

The appropriate gauging conditions and acceptance criteria must be followed for the specified connector.

How the Gauges Are Used

The purpose of dimensional gauging is to establish whether the mating connector geometry falls within the permitted limits.

Plug Gauge:
The laboratory prepares the socket connector, engages the gauge using the prescribed force and rotation conditions, and examines the position of the connector relative to the reference steps.

Ring Gauge:
The corresponding cone connector is inspected using the ring gauge geometry and applicable engagement procedure.

Gauge inspection should be performed using correctly identified reference tools and controlled test conditions.

These gauges do not independently measure connector leakage, respiratory pressure, delivered tidal volume or ventilation performance.

Why the 32 mm Connector Geometry Matters

The 32 mm conical connection is associated with the bag refill valve interface of a user-powered resuscitator.

Its specified geometry is important for maintaining the intended mating relationship between the resuscitator connector and the corresponding valve component.

Dimensional deviations can affect how the two components engage. The use of reference gauges enables manufacturers and laboratories to inspect connector geometry without relying solely on visual examination or uncontrolled mating checks.

Connector Standard Distinction:
The 32 mm connection should not be confused with the commonly used 15 mm and 22 mm respiratory connectors covered by ISO 5356-1. The connector dimensions and intended applications are different.

Typical Laboratory Applications

Application Typical Use
Manual Resuscitator Manufacturing Inspection of 32 mm bag refill valve connectors during production quality control.

FAQ

Which gauge is required for the 32 mm socket and cone connectors?
The KP-10651P Plug Gauge is used to inspect the 32 mm socket connector specified for attachment of a bag refill valve under ISO 10651-4. The KP-10651R Ring Gauge is used for the corresponding cone connector of the refill valve. Each gauge has a different reference geometry and inspection purpose.
What is the acceptance criterion when using the ISO 10651-4 32 mm Plug Gauge?
Under ISO 10651-4:2023 Clause 6.6, the socket connector is assessed by engaging the Figure 1 plug gauge under the prescribed test conditions. The connector's leading edge must lie between the minimum and maximum diameter steps of the plug gauge. The inspection is therefore based on the position of the connector relative to the reference steps, not simply whether the gauge can be inserted.
What force and rotation are required for the 32 mm Plug Gauge inspection?
ISO 10651-4:2023 specifies an axial engagement force of 50 ± 5 N, applied while rotating the connector through 20 ± 5°. These are controlled engagement conditions. They should not be confused with a connector pull-off force, and the mechanical plug gauge does not independently measure the applied load or rotation.
How is the 32 mm Ring Gauge used to inspect the bag refill valve cone?
The KP-10651R Ring Gauge provides a defined internal reference geometry for checking the corresponding 32 mm cone connector. ISO 10651-4:2023 Clause 6.6 identifies the Figure 1 ring gauge as an alternative means of checking the cone connector using a similar gauging approach. The laboratory should apply the relevant engagement procedure and acceptance criteria to the cone being inspected.
Why do the Plug Gauge and Ring Gauge have different reference diameters?
The gauges are designed for different mating surfaces and therefore have different dimensional limits. The KP-10651P includes specified diameters of 31.840 ± 0.005 mm and 32.234 ± 0.005 mm, while the KP-10651R uses 31.775 ± 0.005 mm and 32.158 ± 0.005 mm. These dimensions correspond to their respective reference geometries. The gauges are not interchangeable even though they belong to the same nominal 32 mm connector system.
Can ISO 5356-1 respiratory connector gauges be used instead of these 32 mm gauges?
No. The ISO 10651-4 32 mm gauges address the bag refill valve connection of a user-powered resuscitator, whereas ISO 5356-1 covers other conical connections used in anaesthetic and respiratory equipment. For example, the commonly used ISO 5356-1 22 mm Conical Connector Gauge is not a substitute for the ISO 10651-4 Figure 1 gauges. The nominal size, interface geometry and applicable inspection requirements must match the intended connector.
Does passing the 32 mm gauge inspection confirm that the resuscitator is leak-tight?
No. Passing the plug or ring gauge inspection demonstrates that the inspected connector meets the relevant dimensional gauging criterion under the specified conditions. It does not independently verify air leakage, valve operation, connector separation resistance or ventilation performance. Those characteristics must be evaluated using the additional test procedures required for the finished resuscitator.
Can gauges manufactured to ISO 10651-4:2002 be used for testing to ISO 10651-4:2023?
They should not be assumed interchangeable without dimensional verification. ISO 10651-4:2023 supersedes the 2002 edition. Before using existing gauges for testing to the newer edition, the laboratory should verify their reference dimensions, tolerances and applicable gauging requirements against the required Figure 1 specification. A gauge identified only as an ISO 10651-4 32 mm gauge is not sufficient evidence of conformity to a particular edition.
Do I need to purchase both the 32 mm Plug Gauge and Ring Gauge?
The required configuration depends on which connector interfaces your laboratory inspects. For socket connector inspection, the KP-10651P Plug Gauge is required. For the corresponding cone connector, the KP-10651R Ring Gauge is applicable. Manufacturers responsible for verifying both mating components may require a matching set. Please identify the models and quantities needed when requesting a quotation.
Can the 32 mm Plug and Ring Gauges be used for routine production quality control?
Yes. The KP-10651P Plug Gauge and KP-10651R Ring Gauge can support routine dimensional inspection of the corresponding 32 mm bag refill valve connectors during manufacturing and incoming quality control. For consistent inspection results, laboratories should maintain the specified gauge geometry, apply the appropriate engagement conditions and periodically verify gauge dimensions and wear. Routine dimensional inspection does not replace the complete performance testing required for resuscitator conformity assessment under ISO 10651-4.
