Was bedeuten IP-Schutzarten?

IP ratings describe how well an enclosure protects against solid particles and water. The first digit shows protection against solid objects and dust, while the second digit shows protection against water. For example, IP54 means dust protected and splash resistant, while IP65 means dust tight and protected against water jets.

Definition

Was ist eine IP-Bewertung?

An IP rating, or Ingress Protection rating, is a standardized code used to define how well an enclosure resists the entry of solid objects, dust and water. The IP code is defined by IEC 60529 and is widely used for electrical enclosures, outdoor products, lighting, consumer electronics, industrial equipment and laboratory-tested devices.

KingPo bietet IP-Prüfgeräte for laboratories and manufacturers that need to verify IPX1 to IPX8 water ingress protection, IP5X and IP6X dust protection, water jet testing and related enclosure reliability requirements.

IP Code Structure

So funktioniert der IP-Code

The IP code starts with IP followed by two characters. The first character indicates protection against solid particles such as tools, wires and dust. The second character indicates protection against water, from dripping water to powerful jets and immersion. Higher numbers usually mean stronger protection, but dust and water ratings are independent.

Engineering Selection Note

IP54 vs IP65: Which One Should You Choose?

Choose IP54 for general outdoor use where light rain, splashing and limited dust exposure are expected. Choose IP65 when the product must be dust tight and withstand water jets, such as outdoor electronics, EV charging equipment, security cameras or industrial enclosures. If harsh washdown or marine exposure is expected, IP66 may be more suitable.

Product Design Guidance

Why IP Ratings Matter for Product Design

Choosing the right IP rating helps prevent water ingress, dust contamination, corrosion, electrical failure and premature product damage. For laboratories and manufacturers, the target rating should be selected according to the actual use environment, cleaning method, expected dust exposure and water exposure.

For dusty outdoor applications, compare IEC 60529 IP5X and IP6X dust testing. For immersion applications, review the IPX8 waterproof testing guide. For water jet verification, check KingPo’s IPX5 and IPX6 test nozzle and related IP test systems.

FAQ

IP Ratings Guide FAQ

What is IP54 rating and what does it protect against?

IP54 means the enclosure is dust protected and protected against water splashing from any direction. It is water resistant, not fully waterproof.

Was ist der Unterschied zwischen IP54 und IP55?

IP54 protects against splashing water. IP55 protects against low pressure water jets using a 6.3 mm nozzle. Both have the same dust protection level.

IP54 vs IP65: which one should I choose?

Choose IP54 for light outdoor exposure and occasional rain. Choose IP65 when full dust tight protection and water jet resistance are required.

Is IPX4 waterproof?

IPX4 is splash proof, but it is not fully waterproof. It does not protect against water jets or immersion.

Was ist der Unterschied zwischen IPX4 und IPX5?

IPX4 protects against splashing water. IPX5 protects against water jets and is stronger for outdoor portable devices exposed to rain or angled spraying.

IP65 vs IP66: when should I choose IP66?

IP66 adds protection against powerful water jets. Choose IP66 for marine environments, industrial washdown areas or locations with stronger water exposure.

What does IPX7 rating mean?

IPX7 means temporary immersion protection, commonly 1 meter of water for 30 minutes under IEC 60529 test conditions.

IP54 vs IPX4: which is better for outdoor use?

IP54 is usually better because it includes dust protection as well as splash water protection. IPX4 only defines water splash protection.

How is IPX5 testing performed according to IEC 60529?

IPX5 testing uses a calibrated 6.3 mm nozzle delivering 12.5 liters per minute for at least 3 minutes, with water sprayed from practical directions.

Can IP55 replace IP65?

Only in low dust environments. IP65 provides full dust tight protection, which is important in dusty, sandy or harsh outdoor locations.

What does IP54 waterproof rating actually mean?

IP54 waterproof is a common marketing phrase, but technically IP54 is splash resistant, not waterproof for immersion or strong water jets.

Was ist der Unterschied zwischen IP65 und IP67?

IP65 protects against dust and water jets. IP67 adds temporary immersion protection, commonly 1 meter for 30 minutes.

How can a product’s IP rating be verified?

A product’s IP rating should be verified using professional IP test equipment and documented test procedures based on IEC 60529 or the applicable product standard.

IP Ratings Guide Note: This guide is designed for engineers, product designers and laboratory teams who need to compare common IEC 60529 protection levels before selecting IP testing equipment or defining enclosure test requirements. Always confirm the applicable product standard, sample condition, acceptance criteria and laboratory procedure before testing.
