Was bedeuten IP-Schutzarten?
IP ratings describe how well an enclosure protects against solid particles and water. The first digit shows protection against solid objects and dust, while the second digit shows protection against water. For example, IP54 means dust protected and splash resistant, while IP65 means dust tight and protected against water jets.

Was ist eine IP-Bewertung?
An IP rating, or Ingress Protection rating, is a standardized code used to define how well an enclosure resists the entry of solid objects, dust and water. The IP code is defined by IEC 60529 and is widely used for electrical enclosures, outdoor products, lighting, consumer electronics, industrial equipment and laboratory-tested devices.
KingPo bietet IP-Prüfgeräte for laboratories and manufacturers that need to verify IPX1 to IPX8 water ingress protection, IP5X and IP6X dust protection, water jet testing and related enclosure reliability requirements.
So funktioniert der IP-Code
The IP code starts with IP followed by two characters. The first character indicates protection against solid particles such as tools, wires and dust. The second character indicates protection against water, from dripping water to powerful jets and immersion. Higher numbers usually mean stronger protection, but dust and water ratings are independent.
Solid Particle Protection Levels
| Niveau | Schutzstufe | Bedeutung im Ingenieurwesen |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | Kein Schutz | Kein Schutz gegen feste Gegenstände. |
| 1 | Große Objekte | Protection against objects larger than 50 mm, such as accidental hand contact. |
| 2 | Finger sized objects | Protection against objects larger than 12.5 mm. |
| 3 | Werkzeuge und dicke Drähte | Protection against objects larger than 2.5 mm. |
| 4 | Small wires and objects | Protection against objects larger than 1 mm. |
| 5 | Staubgeschützt | Limited dust ingress is allowed if it does not interfere with operation or safety. |
| 6 | Staubdicht | No dust ingress. This is the highest solid particle protection level. |
Schutzstufen gegen Wassereintritt
| Niveau | Schutzstufe | Bedeutung im Ingenieurwesen | Typical KingPo Equipment |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | Kein Schutz | Kein Schutz gegen Wasser. | Unzutreffend |
| 1 | Vertikal tropfendes Wasser | Protection against vertically falling water drops. | IPX1 drip box / rain test system |
| 2 | Tropfwasser beim Kippen | Protection when the enclosure is tilted up to 15 degrees. | IPX2 drip box with turntable or tilt support |
| 3 | Wasser sprühen | Protection against water sprayed up to 60 degrees from vertical. | IPX3 oscillating tube or spray nozzle |
| 4 | Spritzendes Wasser | Schutz gegen Spritzwasser aus allen Richtungen. | IPX4 oscillating tube or spray nozzle |
| 5 | Wasserstrahlen | Protection against water jets using a 6.3 mm nozzle. | IPX5 test nozzle |
| 6 | Leistungsstarke Wasserstrahlen | Protection against powerful water jets using a 12.5 mm nozzle. | IPX6 test nozzle |
| 7 | Vorübergehendes Eintauchen | Commonly tested at 1 meter for 30 minutes. | IPX7 Tauchbecken |
| 8 | Kontinuierliches Eintauchen | Test conditions are agreed between manufacturer and laboratory. | IPX8 pressure immersion tank or custom immersion system |
| 9/9K | Hochdruck-Wasserstrahlen | High pressure and high temperature water jet protection, depending on the applicable standard. | IPX9 / IPX9K high-pressure water jet test chamber |
IP44, IP54, IP55, IP65, IP66, IPX4, IPX5 and IPX7 Comparison
| IP-Schutzklasse | Staubschutz | Wasserschutz | Typische Anwendungen | Empfohlener Testschwerpunkt |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IP44 | Objects over 1 mm | Spritzendes Wasser | Bathroom fixtures, sheltered outdoor lights | IP4X access probe + IPX4 splash test |
| IP54 | Staubgeschützt | Spritzendes Wasser | Garden tools, outdoor control boxes | IP5X dust test + IPX4 splash test |
| IP55 | Staubgeschützt | Wasserstrahlen | Workshops, washdown areas | IP5X dust test + IPX5 water jet test |
| IP65 | Staubdicht | Wasserstrahlen | Outdoor cameras, EV chargers, solar equipment | IP6X dust test + IPX5 water jet test |
| IP66 | Staubdicht | Leistungsstarke Wasserstrahlen | Marine equipment, heavy industrial enclosures | IP6X dust test + IPX6 powerful water jet test |
| IPX4 | Keine Angabe | Spritzendes Wasser | Consumer electronics, shower area devices | IPX4 splash water test only |
| IPX5 | Keine Angabe | Wasserstrahlen | Portable outdoor devices | IPX5 water jet test only |
| IPX7 | Keine Angabe | Vorübergehendes Eintauchen | Action cameras, waterproof devices | IPX7 temporary immersion test |
IP54 vs IP65: Which One Should You Choose?
Choose IP54 for general outdoor use where light rain, splashing and limited dust exposure are expected. Choose IP65 when the product must be dust tight and withstand water jets, such as outdoor electronics, EV charging equipment, security cameras or industrial enclosures. If harsh washdown or marine exposure is expected, IP66 may be more suitable.
Detaillierte Aufschlüsselung der IP-Schutzarten
IP44
Protection against objects larger than 1 mm and splashing water from any direction.
IP54
Limited dust ingress protection combined with splash water protection.
IP55
Dust protected enclosure with resistance to low pressure water jets.
IP65
Dust tight enclosure with protection against water jets.
IP66
Dust tight enclosure with protection against powerful water jets.
IPX7
Temporary immersion protection, commonly tested at 1 meter for 30 minutes.
Why IP Ratings Matter for Product Design
Choosing the right IP rating helps prevent water ingress, dust contamination, corrosion, electrical failure and premature product damage. For laboratories and manufacturers, the target rating should be selected according to the actual use environment, cleaning method, expected dust exposure and water exposure.
For dusty outdoor applications, compare IEC 60529 IP5X and IP6X dust testing. For immersion applications, review the IPX8 waterproof testing guide. For water jet verification, check KingPo’s IPX5 and IPX6 test nozzle and related IP test systems.
